Hyla Middle School Barn
Bainbridge Island, Washington
Site: The historic Bucklin Hill Farm was converted to a middle school for 6th, 7th and 8th grades in 1994. Over the years the campus has been expanded to include a new library and education wing. Recently, the historic barn structure underwent seismic upgrades, renovation and relocation.
Program: The barn houses the school climbing wall and student science project area.
Solution: The building was lifted off its pole barn foundation system and placed on a concrete code compliant foundation. The new foundation provides a dry storage area for the drama department. Exposed steel diagonal bracing was added to the upper level to bring the climbing wall area into code compliance.
Experience: A project of Kriegh Architects.
